Buxton - 18th June

We caught the bus into Manchester and then took a train to Buxton.
The train took us through some nice country side and small villages. The train trip to Buxton took an hour.

Wendy's Dad, Steven's Uncle Geoff met us at the Buxton train station and we walked through the town to a pub for lunch.
Buxton is a lovely scenic town full of amazing old buildings. We had fish and chips with mushy peas. Also a pint of beer.

Buxton is a spa town, the water rises at a constant 28 degrees.
It was settled by the Romans.

The water is piped to St Annes Well, this well was constructed in 1940. It was constructed on the site that had been used as a well since Roman Times.

Buxton had a surge in popularity in the 1800's when people started travelling there for the supposed healing qualities of the water.

The water is said to be 200 years old, by the time the rain has soaked down to the spring and then is returned to the surface.

We went on to the Opera House where Uncle Geoff has been a volunteer for many years. He took us in for a guided tour. Jimmy Carr is playing tonight, sadly it's sold out.
Large theatre groups in England will not play at theatres witht less than 900 seats, so in 2001 when the theatre was refurbished they increased the seating to 902.

The gold leaf was repaired at a cost of 2 million pounds.

We went to the Devonshire Dome, which was the largest unsupported dome in the world for quite a few years, bigger than St Pauls cathedral. It is still the biggest dome in England.
We stood in the centre point of the dome and listened to the amazing accoustics, where every sound you make, even very quiet ones, come back at you as echoes.
The dome was used as a hospital from 1859 to 2000. It was originally built in 1780 as a stable to house the horses and servants of visitors to the then popular Spa Town.

We then went for a wander through the park and had a look at the Octagon Concert Hall, lot's of glass and recently refurbished.

We found a squirrel in the park.
