Leeds - 22nd June

Looking around Leeds today with Mark, Michelle and Matilda.
First stop is their allotment to have a look at all of Matilda's strawberry plants.
Allotments have been a part of British culture for many years. They are areas of land set aside for people to use as gardens. Many houses don't have gardens so this is the alternative. Some of the allotments are serious ventures with small sheds and structures.

We stopped off at the Square to watch some cricket, India and Afghanistan. My favourite bowler was bowling, Rashid Khan. It was tempting to get a beer and settle in.

Tammy had a try at bowling.

The original Leeds hospital is a wonderful old building, it was constructed in 1863.

We went to the Art Gallery to have a look in the shop.
Outside of the Art Gallery we saw this modern sculpture, it was created by Henry Moore a relative of Marks.

We went to the Town Hall, unfortunately we couldn't get to the good bits because the roof was being repaired. The building was built in 1853 and was designed by Cuthbert Brodrick, one of the most important Architects in Leeds, he also designed the amazing Corn Exchange building.

The Corn Exchange.
Built in 1864.
It is one of three remaining Corn Exchange buildings still used for trading in England, there were many of them built, most cities and large towns had them. It now has specialty shops and has some exhibitions and concerts held in it.

On to the market to get Steven some reading glasses.
The food section is huge lots of fresh fish and meat.
Leeds Market is the largest covered market in Europe. It has 800 stalls and attracts 100,000 visitors a week. It also has an open market to one side that is open on weekends.

Steven did some grocery shopping.

We went to a nice fish and chip shop for tea.
Then we went to Michelle's Church to watch a brass band, they were great.
Half way through it Steven and Mark disappeared off to the pub.
